FULGENCE |
“Painting is a truly great personal expression” |
His mother was a Malagasy musician and his father Chinese .
Known by his first-name only: Fulgence, he grew up in an artistic environment.
This self-taught artist spent his early life in Fianarantsoa and left for Antananarivo ” just to have look see”! Such was his success that he was invited to exhibit at the Baguette Dorée.
Travelling in France he devoured all that the Parisian museums could offer, all the different styles of painting throughout the centuries.”You don’t mess-about in art”, he says, “This is a serious business, it demands total personal investment.” Of course he goes to Montmartre. There, the groups of painters working together inspire him to return to Antsirabe and create the same artistic cooperation. He forms, along with Michel Randria and Solofoson, among others, an artistic association open to those willing to exchange their ideas on art and on painting techniques and eager to exhibit together. He encourages the local authorities to be more receptive to the art-scene.
Fulgence paints movement with vibrant colour. Using several different styles he depicts coq-fights, dancers and musicians with deft movement and verve. His present work in progress is an immense canvass depicting fisher-women in a frenzy of nets and waves by the sea-shore.
